
The “National Midwives Week Event,” organized by the Midwifery Department of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMÜ) in collaboration with the Alumni Tracking Commission, was held in the Faculty of Health Sciences Conference Hall with a large attendance.
The program was attended by the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Prof. Dr. Esra Pancar Yüksel, the Vice Dean, Dr. Seval Ağaçdiken Alkan, the Head of the Midwifery Department, Prof. Dr. Zeliha Koç, academics, alumni, and midwives and nurses working at the OMÜ Health Application and Research Center (SUVAM) and Samsun City Hospital. Numerous healthcare professionals from various other institutions also participated in the event.
In her opening speech, Dean Prof. Dr. Esra Pancar Yüksel highlighted the International Confederation of Midwives' (ICM) 2026 theme, “One Million More Midwives,” emphasizing the critical role of midwifery in the healthcare system. Following this, Dr. Şebnem Rüzgar, Assistant Head of the Midwifery Department, also spoke, offering her assessments on the importance of the profession within the same theme.
Alumni-Student Meeting Held
As part of the event, alumni-student meeting was held where Rukiye Tunç Aydın, a 2007 graduate of the Midwifery Department at OMÜ Samsun Health Vocational School, met with students with her presentation titled "Professional Experiences in Midwifery." Aydın shared her field experiences and professional knowledge, providing guidance to young midwifery candidates.
During the ceremony held as part of the program, 66 midwifery students received their fetoscopes, taking their first symbolic steps into their professional lives. In the emotional ceremony, students were invited to the stage to receive their fetoscopes.
The event continued with Dr. Öğr. A "Birth Care Guide and Partography Workshop" was organized for 4th-year students by member Nuran Mumcu, while course materials prepared by the midwifery community throughout the semester were also exhibited and presented to the participants.
The event, which strengthened the sharing of knowledge and experience between students and graduates, was considered an important gathering that increased professional solidarity. The program concluded with the taking of commemorative photographs.
